"Re: Sierra on Tasmanian Tiger" by Aussie Mate - 6.16.18

"Re: Tasmanian Tiger" by Sierra (NZ) - 6.16.18

I live on mainland Australia and, although having visited Tasmania on a number of occasions, I am only really aware of the mystery side on the Tasmanian Tiger story.

In this context, the Tasmanian Tiger, not to be confused with the Tasmanian Devil (the latter becoming the basis of a "Looney Tunes" cartoon character), is believed to be extinct. The Melbourne Museum (in mainland state of Victoria) has or had a stuffed Tasmanian Tiger on display when I was of school age. The breed (thylacine) was the largest carnivorous marsupial of "modern" times.

The form of a Tasmanian Tiger, from the perspective of my memory, was that the front-half portion somewhat resembled that of a greyhound, with the second half also being a tapering body from the rib cage / chest area to the hindlegs. it also had a thickish base to its tail tapering through to the end.

The colour possibly varied, but my memory is that of a fawn -coloured short-haired coat, with the back three-quarters bearing dark / blackish vertical stripes down its sides.

As the name suggests, the species was local to the island state of Tasmania (and, maybe, Papua New Guinea to Australia's north?), which is south of the mainland state of Victoria, across Bass Strait (treacherous waters often highlighted in the Sydney to Hobart yacht race run each year, with the start of that race beginning the day after Christmas Day).

Its habitat dwindled as more and more land was cleared for farming following settlement in the second half of the 1800's. This brought the existence of the Tasmanian Tiger to attention due to the threat it posed to livestock. It was hunted and effectively eradicated by the early 1900's.

Occasionally, stories surfaced about possible sightings but, to my memory, not since the late-1900's.

I believe that the Tasmanian Tiger is now truly extinct due to ever dwindling "breeding stock" being insufficient to support its ongoing existence.

If anyone is actually interested in following up, a Google search using "Tasmanian Tiger" will most likely provide you with useful information. It will provide pictures of the animal

I trust this helps...
