"The Desire to Encourage and be Encouraged" by John - 5.24.18

Entry Submitted by John at 9:53 AM EDT on May 24, 2018

One of the things that I’ve learned in life is, whenever I’ve needed encouraged and, there’s no encouragement to be found anywhere else, I look for ways to try and encourage someone else. You might ask, “What good does that do, John?” and, my answer would be that, somehow, in the process of trying to encourage someone else, I'm encouraged myself. It’ like an immediate result in my own life, by way of the law of sowing and reaping. In truth, that’s the purpose of this post today. In a sense, I’m being a little selfish because, this morning, I felt a need for encouragement. So, I started thinking of a way that I could possibly encourage anyone who might read this and, regardless of how long you’ve been involved in this endeavor that we’re waiting on, you’ve gone through a process of change…perhaps, even transformation in your life. It’s possible, the people you know have already noticed it too and, as difficult as the process may seem at times, you need to know that it was all necessary to get you to where you are right now. The phrase “For such a time as this” comes to mind, as to where we all are, right now. Who you are, at this very moment is different from the man or woman you were even six months ago and, assuredly, a year ago or two or three. Think of the people who’ve been involved in this since the introduction of the idea of the New Iraqi Dinar in October of 2003…surely, you are different from who you were at the start and, quite frankly, you couldn’t help but be changed. Chances are, you’re more patient than you were in the beginning. You may even be more tolerant and, helpful to others. What may’ve begun in you as an idea of having a whole new lifestyle, may’ve gone through a process of transmutation where you can hardly wait to begin a service to others and, whatever lifestyle you may enjoy is truly secondary, at best, to everything else. If that’s you, I believe the frustration you’re feeling is stemming from the deep-seated desire you have to be used as a vessel of mercy to others and, the seeming delay to that happening. Never the less, I believe, that frustration all comes as a part of the process of preparation for what lies ahead in our lives and, that process finds its roots in a statement recorded to have been said by none other than the man called Jesus. We can find it the first time recorded in the Book of Matthew, chapter 9 verse 17.

""And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. For the old skins would burst from the pressure, spilling the wine and ruining the skins. New wine is stored in new wineskins so that both are preserved.”

…and, again in Mark 2:22

“And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. For the wine would burst the wineskins, and he win and the skins would both be lost. New wine calls for new wineskins."

So, when I began to consider all that I've gone through to get to where I am today…to become the man I am today, I started looking for something that I could compare this whole exercise of patience that we’ve all faced since our eyes were first opened to the possibilities in our lives, as we chose to walk down this path. Of course, the only life I had to look at was my own and, at the risk of sounding as though I’m trying to present myself as something I’m not, just as in your life, no one else knows what you’ve gone through better than you. If you were able to look into a spiritual mirror, who would you see? Would the man or woman looking back at you appear to have been transformed from the former you? Are they more patient, more tolerant, more loving and, more kind? Do you have more self-control? Can it be said that you’re more prepared to receive the blessing that’s in the process of manifesting as we speak? You see, what the Lord showed me about myself is that this whole process was akin to "the renewing of my wineskin.” Preparing me to the extent that when this “new wine” is poured into my life, it won’t overwhelm me in a way that it might once have. All the concerns that you might have once had about being ready to talk to the man or woman helping you with your redemption or exchange are quickly vanquished, simply because, if there’s anything that can be said to be good about being made to wait until now, it's the passage of time that may be said to be good, because of the change that has taken place in who you are today. Now, as you sit across the table from someone who may’ve once been intimidating to you, you actually feel comfortable in just being yourself…and, all because of a process that you’ve gone through, that seemed so frustrating at times that you may’ve wondered if you would survive.

There was a group of women in a Bible study on the book of Malachi. As they were studying chapter three they came across verse three which says,

"He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver.”

This verse puzzled the women and they wondered what this statement meant about the character and nature of God.

One of the women offered to find out about the process of refining silver and get back to the group at their next Bible study. That week the woman called up a silversmith and made an appointment to watch him at work. She didn't mention anything about the reason for her interest in silver beyond her curiosity about the process of refining silver. As she watched the silversmith, he held a piece of silver over the fire and let it heat up. He explained that, in refining silver, one needed to hold the silver in the middle of the fire where the flames were hottest so as to burn away all the impurities. The woman thought about God holding us in such a hot spot - then she thought again about the verse, that He sits as a refiner and purifier of silver. She asked the silversmith if it was true that he had to sit there in front of the fire the whole time the silver was being refined. The man answered that yes, he not only had to sit there holding the silver, but he had to keep his eyes on the silver the entire time it was in the fire. For if the silver was left even a moment too long in the flames, it would be destroyed.

The woman was silent for a moment. Then she asked the silversmith, "How do you know when the silver is fully refined?" He smiled at her and answered, "Oh, that's the easy part -- when I see my image reflected in it."

If today you are feeling the heat of the fire, remember that God has His eye on you and will keep His hand on you and watch over you until He sees His image in you.

The LORD bless you and keep you;
the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you;
the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.
Numbers 6:24-26 ESV

I hope this blesses you as much as it did me in putting it together.

in Christ, John
