Scam Alert: You can't pay government debt with Treasury routing numbers

Posted: Fri 2:32 PM, Aug 11, 2017

You can't get out of paying government debts by using a routing number that points to the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

A new scam instructs people to use a government routing number and to put their Social Security number in the checking account field.

According to the Michigan Department of Treasury, they've noticed an increase in people who are trying to pay state debts with routing numbers from two U.S. Department of Treasury Bureaus – the Financial Management Service (FMS) and the Bureau of the Public Debt (BPD).

“Please do not fall for this scam,” said Deputy Treasurer Ann Good, head of Treasury’s Financial and Administrative Services Group. “Individuals who try to pay their state debts in this way will have their payment rejected. Treasury will work with you to resolve your outstanding debts.”

Michigan residents who think they may have an outstanding state tax debt or other state debt are encouraged to call the Michigan Department of Treasury's Office of Collections at 517-636-5265.
