"Intelligence" by One Who Loves - 8.9.17

Entry Submitted by One Who Loves at 12:38 PM EDT on August 9, 2017

Defined: intelligence (quotient, a.k.a. IQ) is the sum total of the words you understand correctly.

When in doubt, consult a dictionary. Many here apparently have no doubt, so they go ahead boldly and use the wrong word. The benefit to using a dictionary? When you learn the correct meaning of a word, you then have a new skill and new options. Because you now know the correct and incorrect meaning of a word, you will always understand what the original author meant in their writing >> you will almost automatically choose the meaning actually intended by the author, through the context in which it is used, whether they used the word correctly or not!!!

From Gammarist: Tact is sensitivity in social situations. A tack is a course or an approach (the word has nautical origins). When switching courses or taking a different approach, one changes tack, not tact. (If you pronounce both words correctly, you will discern that they sound similar, but not identical.)

Tact often appears in place of tack. Presumably some people think of it as short for tactic, which is synonymous with tack in some contexts. This is understandable given how rare tack is, but tact is not conventionally short for tactic, and, fairly or not, phrases like change tact are generally considered wrong by people who pay attention to these things.

From Google: “Tack” — is actually derived from sailing terminology. The tack is the lower leading corner of the sail; it points the direction the ship is heading. So when a sailboat changes course, it's changing from one tack to another, or “taking a different tack.”

Loose and lose can both be verbs. So you can loosen a knot, but not losen a knot (makes no sense whatsoever)! Loose clothing is comfortable while "lose clothing" is typically not. You can loose a dog from a leash (or even lose it from a leash, though rarely).

Google: "He was making progress, albeit rather slowly", clearly defines the word albeit. However sobeit (it is a conjunction), actually means “provided that, if.” It is actually mostly used in "legal" documents. So while sobeit is a valid word, it does not mean "so be it", which is actually a clause. So, I understand exactly what people mean in Dinarland when they use the word "sobeit", even though most use the word incorrectly.

These following are easy for most people: some posters here use weather when they mean whether. Contractions: a number of people write your when they mean you're (contraction of you & are).

When you use incorrect words, you run the risk of confusing or alienating your readers. Probably, neither was intended by you.

Jus' sayin'...

Love people and love languages... Interesting that verbal communications involve both oral and aural skills. These two English words have the same pronunciation!!!
