"Facing The Giants" by John - 7.29.17

Entry Submitted by John at 12:57 PM EDT on July 29, 2017

First of all, let's talk "imagery." Do you remember this movie? If you do, you may also remember the others that went along with but, the story line for each one of them was pretty much the same. Having seen the movie, we know the rest of this story. However, we knew the rest of the story long before the movie came out because, it's actually the story about everyone of our lives, at some point. We've all faced our share of "Goliaths." Fortunately, for many of us anyway, we're able to look back at our past, for moments just like this and, it's from those experiences that, anytime later in life, when the odds are weighed against us, we draw strength from those experiences and gain wisdom. In the scriptures, it is written in Romans 15:4

"For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope."

You see, neither of us we're there when Paul (formerly Saul of Tarsus) wrote that down but, since he did and, we have it today to see and to read, we have an "imagery" to use to our own benefit individually and then, as each of us chooses in whatever way we do, collectively we become, have become and, are becoming more so every day, a force to be reckoned with.

In this same light, as you click on the link below and watch the scene from the movie "Facing The Giants", which, as a title, metaphorically speaks to the very thing we're all doing and going through right now but, listen to the words of the head-coach, as he's being told by his other coaches, how impossible the task ahead of him is. Then, there's the "Sage", the actual Head Coach at the time of the University of Georgia Bulldogs who says,

"You've gotta kick it, man!"

Then, the kicker says,

"I've never kicked one that far"

but, the coach encourages the kicker whose name happens to be David,

"You've got to do your best and leave the rest to God."

Then, he's asked by the assistant,

"What are you doing?"

and, he answers,

"I'm preparing for rain."

Or, did he mean "Reign"?

Listen...from the story in the Bible about David and Goliath, what I remember the most as a boy, was how all the focus was on David facing Goliath but, as a grown man, I've learned and, did you know that David was prepared to face Goliath's four brothers as well?

In 1 Samuel 17:40 we read,

"He picked up five smooth stones from a stream and put them into his shepherd's bag. Then, armed only with his shepherd's staff and sling, he started across the valley to fight the Philistine."

Notice it says that he picked up "five smooth stones." Why "smooth" instead of jagged and pointed? I think David had an understanding of "ballistics" if you want to know what I think. He knew he had to get the first blow in. If he didn't, there may have not been the chance to even spit on Goliath, much less do what he was destined to do.

Here's one boy, got all intents and purposes, going up against the very semblance of the bane to all of God's people and, by the way, if you look to God and trust Him, that includes you and me. It just so happens, we know the end of this story too. It took a single stone to bring Goliath down to an "eye to eye meeting" with David. We also know, that meeting didn't go too well for Goliath and yet, leading up to that meeting, everyone, including his own brothers told him he "couldn't do it." Finally, King Saul relented and gave David his own armor to wear into battle. Do you get the imagery, a small boy wearing Saul's armor? Saul was head and shoulders above all other men the scripture says so, you know that David could have been made to feel very insignificant and small right then. Do you see how the enemy to our souls works? He doesn't care who he has to use to bring discouragement into your life. Even someone on our own team, like the head of your own people can be used by the enemy to try and dissuade us. I believe the intent was for the imagery, how he saw hisself, was to make David feel weak and yet, David had many past experiences to draw from.

"As a man thinks in his heart, so is he."
Proverbs 23: 7

David was a Shepherd and, while people even of that time may think that's no big deal, what had David already faced? In protection of his father's sheep, he had killed a lion and a bear. You see, God had already prepared him for this very day and, what did God do for him afterwards? Well, it's one of the things he had heard would be done for anyone who could defeat this "ungodly Philistine."

"King Saul has promised to give a big reward to the man who kills him; the king will also give him his daughter to marry and will not require his father's family to pay taxes." 1 Samuel 17: 25

You see...It is also written

"Humble yourself in the sight of God and He will lift you up."

James 4: 10

You need to know this too. The oldest story and believed to be the oldest book in the Bible is the Book of Job. What is the story of Job except another version of "facing the giants"?

God doesn't cause these confrontations or troubles in our lives. He "allows" them to happen and, He doesn't selectively do so either. We face the "giants" that we do because of the decisions and choices we make but, James also says,

"Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing."
James 1:2-4

See...there's a reward at the end of going through the trials, if we just trust God.

Heather, as I understand, has been given choices....options if you will to forego this part of the battle but, she's chosen to stay the course. She's "Facing The Giants." That's what you and I must do. We owe it to God, we owe it to ourselves and, we definitely owe it to Heather and Randy.

The videos and comments about what's going on behind the scenes with Heather and Randy's incarceration are supposed to be discouraging and, not just to them but, to you and me. That's how the enemy works but, it's all lies and deception. I look at some of it but, I don't pass it along because that just helps the other side spread their propaganda. I'm not "denying the facts" but, the facts don't always speak to truth and since,

"Death and life are in the power of the tongue"

Proverbs 18

I choose to speak "life" because, the end of that part of Proverbs 18 says,

"...and those who love it (the power of the tongue) will eat its fruit."

I don't know about everyone else but, when I eat a piece of fruit, I'm expecting sweet and juicy, not bitter and sour so, I try and choose my words very carefully and, propaganda is just another form of gossip.

Oh, remember the face to face meeting that David had with Goliath? Well, sorry, I don't have a tape recording nor a video but, let the imagery be forever painted in your mind's eye with what is written,

"As Goliath moved closer to attack, David quickly ran out to meet him. Reaching into his shepherd’s bag and taking out a stone, he hurled it with his sling and hit the Philistine in the forehead. The stone sank in, and Goliath stumbled and fell face down on the ground.

So David triumphed over the Philistine with only a sling and a stone, for he had no sword. Then David ran over and pulled Goliath’s sword from its sheath. David used it to kill him and cut off his head."

1 Samuel 17: 48-51

David. Didn't cower in the face of danger. He drew from all his training and lessons from being what others saw as a "lowly Shepherd boy." Today, we even use his name, almost in a cliche' sort of way, when describing how life comes at us sometimes, head-on.

As we face these challenges, it's all part of God's plan for your life and mine that we remember what He says,

"Greater is He who is in me than he who is of the world."
1 John 4:4
It all began when God said,
"Let us make mankind in our image after our likeness."

What is that image and likeness?

Scripture says

"God is Spirit and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth."

So, the real you, the real me the one whom God created in His image and likeness is spirit. In essence, a replica of Him and, as we're striving in life to honor the blessing of having been created in His image and likeness, we may look in the mirror and only see this "earth suit" that we've been given, called a body, to live in here on earth and, while we can't physically see that image that we know He's talking about, inside us, we know it's there. Why? Because that's where He put his own spirit, right along side our own, to draw strength and courage from in times like these.

There are so many examples in Genesis thru Malachi of how God always went ahead of His people into battle. What He wants and expects of us, is simply to continue to "show up" on the battlefield. You see, that's where He wants us to accept the victory...right in front of our enemies. Then, we have His permission to relish in the victory all we want, too. All He asks of us is that we give Him the glory. I'm just saying, we all need to be PREPARING FOR REIGN! Get ready to give Him the glory!

This is what the Lord gave me this morning and, while I was personally feeling the need for encouragement, I've found that the secret to being encouraged sometimes, is seeking to encourage others.

in Christ, John
