"They Have No Legs" by (Anonymous) - 6.7.17

Entry Submitted Anonymously at 3:33 PM EDT on June 7, 2017

They have no legs.

These two things happened today. They are a reference to us as beneficiaries of the RV, that we can make a difference in another’s life.

I’ll set this first one up for you. I’m running very late and stressed this morning and have a full day planned in the office. I pass a corner gas/quickmart place. Out of the corner of my eye I see a guy in a wheel chair with one leg. He’s next to a shaded area. I drive for a couple blocks and whip around and go back to the parking lot near him. He’s not asking for money he’s just sitting in a daze.

I purchase some waters from the quick mart and walk over and hand them to him. He’s thankful and drains one of the bottles. After a little conversation he reveals he’s getting booted from his apartment for not paying. He simply doesn’t have any money. He points to the apartment building, after I ask. It’s one of those single story beat-down properties. Pay by the week/month places with a manager office.

I say good bye to him and go across the street. I ask the manager about the guy and find out the details. He is indeed getting booted but they have been kind to let him stay for 2 months. The woman who is the manager say’s he is a good guy and doesn’t drink or smoke - he is disabled and worn out. I ask her to help me and she agrees. I paid his two months past due and the next month. I tell her I’ll be back.

I go the grocery and pick up a few things and return. She is crying and smiling. She takes the groceries to his apartment. I walk across the street and tell him he doesn’t have to leave his apartment. He doesn’t say anything but has a questioned look on his face. I say its all ok - I worked it out with the manager. I give him some cash. And I leave. Today in Phoenix where it’s 100 degrees in the shade - its hopefully a better day for him.

I’m now on my way to my office, again. It must be no-leg-wheel-chair day. I pull up to a stoplight and there is a guy, “seriously”, with no legs. I roll down the window and say to him, i’m going to toss it to you. I fold up a twenty and zing it out the passenger window. He picks it up, as I roll the window up he is cheering. I give him the thumbs up and turn the corner, laughing and shaking my head in disbelief.

It didn’t hit me until I got to the office what just went down. I’m inspired to share it. This isn’t about me - this is about the people that have been pushed so far down by our F’d up system.

Most of us can’t do this everyday or just one day - but we will be able too soon. Let’s stay strong and focused. Give love and respect.
