"Re: Yes, GCR/RV Clarion Call" by John - 6.16.17

"Yes" - GCR/RV Clarion Call - Friday - June 16, 2017

You could say that they were serious about the security of their cities in ancient times. Of course, they had the enlisted military for, if and when it came to war between kingdoms and, for the criminal element of the time but, generally speaking it wouldn't be for a few thousand years before anything such as a Constable On Patrol, local police or, the "Sheriff of Nottingham" hunting down the likes of "Robin Hood" and his merry band of thieves and, most cities of the day, like Jericho, Jerusalem or, Babylon were like fortifications, protected by a wall that was built around the city's perimeter and, the larger gates mentioned in Scripture were two leaved, plated with metal, closed with locks and fastened with metal bars and, would be closed before sunset and opened at sunrise. The problem was, from time to time, travelers may arrive after the main gate was closed and, if they were being chased by marauders, being forced to wait outside the wall, made them vulnerable to being robbed and, even killed so, an extra gate was devised that was much smaller and, easier to open quickly in the event of such an emergency and, this gate was called "the needle's eye."

Picture this. You're traveling with all your worldly possessions packed on the back of a camel and, seeking the safety of the city, inside the wall but, it's after sundown. The main gate won't be opened again, at least until sunrise so, you lead your camel around to "eye of the needle." Not only was this gate narrow, just like the "eye" of a needle but, it was short. Because most pack animals carried loads that bulged out on the sides, it was impossible for them to just walk through this gate so, it was necessary to unload. Of course, camels were the kind of pack animals a wealthy man typically used and, camels were taller than say, a burro or a donkey. The way it was explained to me was, in order for the camel to be able to be brought inside the safety of the city wall, all that it was carrying on its back, had to be unloaded and' literally dragged by hand, through the gate...maybe even piece by piece. Then, lead by a rope, the camel would literally have to make itself as small as possible, getting on its knees to crawl through the small gate. Think about the timing involved in this exercise. You lead your camel or, as a rich man, probably more than one or two camels but, you're unprotected, outside the wall, at the gate, unloading all your worldly hoods onto the ground. It's dark. Who knows who is waiting in the shadows, ready to take everything you own, slit your throat and, kill everyone else who may be with you and, you're literally dragging the equivalent of one "steamer trunk" at a time through the gate and, lastly, your camel or camels, one at a time, goes to its knees and crawls through the gate. Then, the moment the last camel is through, the gate is closed and. Once again, secured. Now, if everything went as you hoped that it would, this doesn't sound like that big of a deal...as, you may think that "however long it took", well...you'd just work as fast as you could but, there was the constant threat of robbers and, even the possibility of some of the same, entering the wall of the city and, simply going from one home to the next, taking whatever they wanted so, right in the midst of your unloading your possessions fro your camels, the decision could be made that it was necessary to close the gate. Now do you see why Jesus used this analogy?

There are other scriptures that paint a similar picture, such as, Matthew 6: 19-21
"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

Hebrews 13: 5
"Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you."

Matthew 6: 24
"No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money."

Colossians 3: 1-4
"If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory."

Like 11: 13-21
"Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” But he said to him, “Man, who made me a judge or arbitrator over you?” And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?"

1st Timothy 6: 6-10
"Now there is great gain in godliness with contentment, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs."

There are many more but, there's something that has taken place in my life that I'd like to share. You may have had the same experience or, one similar.

Several years ago...and, of course, we were even being told, way back then, on a weekly basis, "This is our week!" and, we were just as expectant back then, as we have been the last few weeks and, because of my own expectancy, I wanted direction from the Lord in getting prepared for after this happened. Of course, we didn't know anything at all about Zimbabwe coming into the picture and, to be truthful, this was even before Vietnam became a part of what we were waiting for...but, I asked the Lord for a word or a phrase that I could hang my hat on...something that I could look to that would give more definition to my purpose. Then, I say in silence, not knowing what to expect but, just believing that I would hear Him say something to me. I don't recall how long I say in silence and, I know that it came from within me but, it was as though He was sitting there in my office and, I heard Him audibly say "Conduit!" I know that I had to have had a puzzled look on my face because, I know what conduit is. My parents own rental property and, I was helping my dad all the time in putting in new electric lines and, running the wires through galvanized conduit in the attics and walls. At the same time, I had no idea how that word applied to me or, what I was looking to Him to get direction for. So, I began by just looking the word up in the dictionary and, trying to have an open heart to see and, hear further what He meant. As I pressed into it, I began to get an image of what He was trying to get across to me...and, I began to understand that I was to act as a conduit for His grace and mercy into the lives of other people. Quite frankly, even at the time, I believe that would be easy as pie. I'm a giver...have been most of my life. I love helping other people but, I really had no idea that He was going to do what you and I are getting ready to experience. Am I ready? The best I can say is, I hope so. In some ways, I know I'm ready...like, not being concerned with having utilities shut off...or, having my pickup repossessed or, ultimately, not knowing where I would lay my head at night. Yeah...I'm ready to get past that and, sincerely, looking for people who just need some help. Maybe they're too proud to ask for it and, maybe they think, somehow they deserve to struggle but, at the same time, they're doing everything they can to live life the way they believe they're supposed to...the Norman Rockwell image of down to earth folks who love each other and, are trying to serve the Lord in their lives. It's going to be fun to see the smiles on their faces...hear the sighs of relief and, of course, witness the glory, honor and praise given to God. There's nothing else I can say...except to quote what Paul said in
1st Corinthians 2: 9...
"But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him."

Grace and peace to you all...in Christ,

John
