"Ethics of Benevolence" by Brigantine - 6.18.17

Entry Submitted by Brigantine at 1:47 PM EDT on June 18, 2017

Ethics of Benevolence.

We as a group are about to go out into our community and begin to practice benevolence. I know from experience, it is difficult to practice benevolence while struggling to survive.

From 2001-2006 I was severely underemployed. Unemployed actually, most of that time. Anyone who has taken that journey knows levels and layers of fear and frustration dominate the psyche. Especially if you have children in diapers, which I did at the time. It was a scary, harsh time. Constantly waiting for the house of cards to collapse is no way to live.

By 2009, I not only had work, but had been working long enough to relax a bit. The bills were getting paid every month and there was even enough left over for some fun. Some know that I am an avid sailing photographer. I go out in my little antique runabout I restored and get in the way of 20,000 pound sailboats, daring them to crush me, as it were. It's actually quite an adrenaline rush and I love it. So, one day I'm out shooting with a friend driving and he says, "You seem much more relaxed and at ease than you used to be. What's different?"

"I'm working. The bills are getting paid. It's a lot easier to be kind and gentle when the bills are getting paid."

"True enough," said my friend. And that was that.

I have been called some harsh things on this web site. Shouted down, repeatedly asked to leave and lied about. I have already forgiven you. Because I put your anger, rejection and herding instinct down to that harsh period I went through from 2001-2006. And truly, no one can hurt us unless we let them. And that did not happen.

What you need to do is forgive yourselves. That's the hard part. Because in order to forgive yourselves, one first must recognize the harm intended.

Not because I need anything from anyone here. No apologies are necessary, no token efforts of recompense. I say this because we all need to do some pretty serious self evaluation as we move forward to begin helping others. How can we even begin to presume to help others, if we have so much difficulty helping ourselves?

First, do no harm. It's a simple enough command. Perhaps not so easy in execution. My immediate plans include anonymously blessing a bunch of people I only casually know and have encountered in my daily routine. Nearly all are struggling. Unfortunately, it has come to my attention that one of the gentleman is a massive drunk. Will handing him a small fortune help or harm him?

This Journey of Benevolence is going to be more difficult than we think. Perhaps one way to make good use of the remainder of our wait, is to have a discussion on the ethics of helping people. It would certainly be a much better use of our time than posting nasty, ugly things about each other. And the lies coming from the "intel providers" will not stop being lies until we are paid. That's got to be obvious to everyone, by now. Perhaps we can all agree on that and use it to move forward.

One thing I do know. I will be tapping a friend on the shoulder and asking her to go back to work for a while. She's a retired clinical psychologist. I do believe she will come in handy as we begin to design our gifting programs. It will be fun working with her, for a while.
