White House Memo 5/1/17
Just a short note. When you're a Constitutionalist, you realize how much a single word Mia-used or out of place can mean a world of difference. Maybe I'm overly concerned but, it's not like all of us don't have reason to be. In the memo, it says;
"Our country is great because our people govern themselves through the rule of law as embodied in our Constitution. Let us give thanks that we live in a land of liberty safeguarded by our Our country is great because our people govern themselves through the rule of law as embodied in our Constitution. Let us give thanks that we live in a land of liberty safeguarded by our constitutional rights and protected by the rule of law. and protected by the rule of law."
People refer to our "Constitutional Rights" all the time, as though each one of those rights are embodied, somewhere in the Constitution. They ARE NOT! The Constitution was written to LIMIT THE AUTHORITY OF GOVERNMENT. The Declaration of Independence states very clearly that,
"To secure these rights governments are instituted among men."
That's why the Constitution is so important. You and I elect people to represent us in the government. They take an oath to protect and defend (uphold) the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic" so, in taking that oath, they agree to constrain themselves and, refrain from going outside the limitations that the organic Constitution allows for. Then, when you consider that the Declaration of Independence isn't just a document with some wonderful ideas but rather, what it spells out are literally principles, suddenly you realize the authority an individual actually has. The very next sentence in the Declaration says, in regard to governments that,
"They derive their just powers from the consent of the governed."
Boys and girls, that's you and me.
Anyway, I'll stop for now.
with patience and faith, in gratitude,
John
