Kindness Pledge by BG

For generations of Americans, May has been associated with kindness.

It is the month that American Humane - the country's first National humane organization - celebrates Be Kind To Animals Week, the oldest commemorative week in U.S. history. This year, it's the week of May 7-13.

To build a new enlightened generation of animal advocates, American Humane is challenging a million people to take the "Kindness Pledge" at www.kindness100.org , asking them to do four simple things to protect and better the lives of animals:

- Seek out humanely raised foods with the American Humane Certified Seal.
-Adopt animals abandoned at shelters.
-Look for "No Animals Were Harmed" credits on films and TV shows.
- Look for Humane Certified when choosing to visit zoos, aquariums and conservation centers.

I would add: Be cognizant of introducing pesticides, insecticides and poisons into the environment because they residually become all-pervasive as the chemicals work through the food chain.

To celebrate Be Kind To Animals Week, take the pledge, find ideas and curricula designed to build empathy in children, and learn more about how you can work to help animals, go online at www.kindness100.org.

There you can find Teaching Sheets for parents, teachers and other adults involved with young people. Each grade level covers four areas relating to the Kindness100 Humane Pledge and supports Common Core Standards.

If I were alone in a desert
and feeling afraid,
I would want a child to be with me.
For then my fear would disappear
and I would be made strong.
This is what life in itself can do
because it is so noble, so full of pleasure
and so powerful.
But if I could not have a child with me
I would like to have at least a living animal
at my side to comfort me.

let those who bring about wonderful things
in their big, dark books
take an animal
to help them.
The life within the animal
will give them strength in turn.
For equality
gives strength, in all things
and at all times.
