"Early Happy Mothers Day" by John - 5.11.17

Entry Submitted by John at 6:10 PM EDT on May 11, 2017

My mom has been gone for over ten years but, I remember hearing this recording for the very first time and, when I say what I do, people who know me, will know at least some of the reasons it touched me as deeply as it did. If you knew mom, you'd also know that with an occasional calling in of my dad for reinforcement, she raised three strappin' boys but, mom was from Texas and, while she walked softly, she carried a "big stick."

At the time I heard this recording, I lived in a town in Oklahoma that was about an hour and a half from where my mother lived but, I had always made it my practice to make the trip over to see her on a regular bssis because, well, you see, I found out that she wasn't just my mom. The kind of stuff I enjoyed doin', I've had a few experiences in life but, no matter how bad I may have been injured nor even, how deep of a valley I might have been going through emotionally, mom was always there. Two or theee times, she was the first person I saw coming out of a coma...but, as I got older, I learned to appreciate her for who I had become. We didn't always agree and, there were times it got a little heated because, well, bein' told straight-up how the cow ate the cabbage by my mom, was akin to gettin' dressed down by a drill sergeant but, she was my mom. Of course, after you've gone out on your own, you start to learn how intelligent of a woman your mom may be and, when I finally mustered up the courage to swallow my pride and thank her, I got to see that she was my friend. That's why, after hearing this the first time, play on the local radio station, I was compelled to go straight to the station and have the guy make a cassette tape of just that recording for me...to give to my mom, just three days later.

There are really, only two "Mothers Days" that stand out in my life. The first one, as of this past Tuesday, happened 35 years ago on May 9. My identical twin sons were born, Mothers Day morning at 6 and 6:10 AM. The second, was that Sunday morning about 4 years later when, I gave my friend, my mother...Mom, that cassette tape that I had made. This many years later, every May 9, in my head. I go through the events, activities and, even some of the emotions that I went through, that weekend a little over 35 years ago when my boys were born and, every Mothers Day since, I can't help but count the blessings that my mom was to me and, I sure do miss her. Like I said, she was more than my mom...she was a friend like no other friend could be...through thick and thin.

Enjoy! and, to all you "Mom's" out there, Happy Mothers Day!
