"Do No Harm - But How? And for Whom?" by Kimberley - 5.1.17

Entry Submitted by Kimberley at 1:11 PM EDT on May 1, 2017

Dear All,

First of all, I’d like to thank Patrick to keep DC in place now for so long, the gurus for their effort of bringing the latest intel for us when possible, and I’d like to thank the community being here, having good intentions, focusing to good and raising awareness day by day of the readers.

I think the question in the subject is a logical question to ask though an important one.

And I also think we need to make this natural law a bit more accurate.

So, “do no harm” sounds a very wise rule and it certainly is. But do no harm to whom?

Do no harm the bad guys? Or the good guys?

And who is going to judge if one is a good guy or a bad one?

Keeping a whole community partly in confusion is a harm, or not?

Sometimes it is added: “if it serves good purpose” meaning if an act is harmful at a first glance but also serves a (maybe) higher purpose which is good then it is okay.

In WW II Winston Churchill let a few hundred die to save hundreds of thousands. Not an easy decision. He let a harmful thing to happen for hundreds. But I cannot say he was wrong because the overall picture is by his act hundreds of thousands were saved.

So, we conclude “to harm” means not going for “the greatest good and less harm possible” solution.

When one goes down the street with his family and a bad guy comes there to rob and harm the family: how you apply “do no harm”?

I believe the first task is to save the family. The second is not to kill the bad guy if it is not necessary. But if there is no other choice left you need to kill him. That's quite a harm, isn't it?

“Do no harm” can be wrong sometimes. Better to say always try to have a “the greatest good and less harm possible” solution.

Intention makes the difference.

I hope everybody has a smooth exchange this week!
