"A Gamer's Guide to the RV" by Fireswan - 5.28.17

I work with Millennials. In fact, the average age of the employees in the company that I work for is 26 years old. To illustrate how this job has been extremely helpful to give me some "memes" to keep my sanity during the RV process, I'm indulging in an office-talk "share". So gather around the coffee machine. When I'm done, I promise that it will be relevant...

"We don't want to "game" Ryan, but he gives us no choice..."

We had a meeting a few months back that changed me forever. Our boss Ryan was feeling upset for some nebulous, illogical reason and issued a mandate to the team in an effort to feel better, perhaps to feel more in control. He mandated that team members estimate how long they anticipated a task to take whenever they acknowledged an IT support ticket. And, it is no longer acceptable to put tickets that can't be completed in a given week into the backlog.

Vocal Revolt

The millennials started with reason... we multitask, we can't know how long each ticket takes to complete because we often get stuck on one ticket, switch to another ticket, doing that ticket gives us insight to solve the first ticket. Or, we don't know what we don't know so we only know how long something we've never done before will take until we've done it.

Fell on deaf ears (with aggravated dismissal)

Then, the millennials switched to sales. We take a lot of time annotating and documenting each ticket so you can always trace where we are at and we could create dashboards to make it easier to see at a glance where we are stuck and what needs to unfold...

The irritation escalated to a veiled angry question "why are you resisting this simple request? I told you to estimate the time you spend on each task. If a task is too big to get done in a week, break it up into smaller tasks and ticket those. What's so hard about that?"

Stunned silence that lasted for an uncomfortably long time.

Finally, "we don't see the benefit to you for us to lie to you this way". We can't know what we don't know and we value people who understand that there is a quality factor to providing accurate reporting. If you don't value the truth, then what's the point in making something up and basing your metrics on lies?"

At this point, Ryan started yelling. "I asked you to do this, it is a simple request that you can easily do. Do it. This meeting is over."

After Ryan walked out, we sat in silence for a long time. It wasn't actually silence because it felt like high speed inaudible thought conversations were going on beneath the silence. Finally, the Canadian spoke, "I don't want to have to "game Ryan" because I personally like him as a human being, but he won't listen to reason and he fights against his own best interest... so he leaves us no choice but to game him."

Sad nods of agreement.

Then the discussion went into gaming the system without distorting our integrity too much, hoping that Ryan will eventually realize that the estimates are worthless and "drop the requirement".

And that's exactly what happened.

Silent Revolt

Moral of the story...

If you have a person or organization that is "asleep", you can't reason with them or sell them on the benefits of waking up. You have to pretend to do what you're told and "play the game" for awhile while gradually introducing "real reality" until games are not needed anymore.

Those stuck in games see themselves in a win-lose situations. Those observing those stuck in games "have no choice but to" enter the game, "hack it" and create a win-win outcome that's best for all... without waking up the sleeping game players.

Hats off to the NPTB. Grandfather is 10 years old for a reason. He wants to be "relevant" to those who already "get it". I bet the average age of the "elders"those behind the RV/GCR process is 26 yrs old.
