The IRS Extend Tax Deadline to April 18, 2017

Why isn't tax deadline on April 15? Why IRS 2017 extended deadline to April 18 this year

People accustomed to submitting tax returns on April 15 have likely noticed a change this year.

A little-known holiday - Emancipation Day - is pushing the 2017 filing deadline for 2016 taxes to April 18.

Celebrated in Washington, D.C., Emancipation Day commemorates the DC Compensated Emancipation Act of 1862 that ended slavery in the nation's capital. The actual day of the holiday is April 16 but it is recognized on a Friday if that day falls on a Saturday and Monday if it falls on a Sunday.

IRS regulations prohibit the tax filing deadline from falling on a Saturday, Sunday or a legal holiday.

April 15 - the traditional tax deadline - is on a Saturday and Emancipation Day falls on a Sunday with official D.C. observation on Monday. All that means the IRS office is closed on Monday, pushing the tax deadline to Tuesday, April 18.

The same deadline applies to Alabama state tax returns.

April 15, 2018 falls on a Sunday and Emancipation Day will be marked on Monday, meaning another change to April 17. The April 15 deadline will return in 2019.

If you still need more time to file your return you can request an automatic automatic six-month extension by filing form 4868. There's no cost to file the form, regardless of income, if it's done through the IRS's Free File website.) Keep in mind, however, that filing an extension doesn't keep you from writing that check to the IRS - you will still owe any taxes due by April 18.
