The Giving Tree: Roots, Rings, Branches and Leaves

The Giving Tree

Tree roots require three things: water, oxygen, and soil compaction levels low enough
(or with void spaces sufficiently large enough) to allow root penetration.

If all these conditions are met, tree roots can grow to great depths.

Under ideal soil and moisture conditions,
roots have been observed to grow to more than 20 feet (6 meters) deep.

Tree rings grow under the bark, and the bark is pushed out while the tree is growing.

The inner part of a growth ring is formed early in the growing season,
when growth is fast and is known as early wood.

The outer portion is the late wood, and is denser than early wood.

Trees grow taller when new cells are produced at the tips of twigs,
causing the twigs to grow longer into tree branches.

Tree trunks and branches grow thicker as new cells are added beneath the bark.
These cells make up vessels, called xylem and phloem,
that carry water and food throughout the tree.

All trees leaves grow using daylight to gauge when it's actually Spring/Summer/Fall/Winter.

When looking at trees that bear leaves and/or fruit, during the summer,
while the days are long, trees do not have sufficient time to build up a stock pile of a
particular compound which is only produced during the night cycle.

During the fall, the nights begin to last longer which gives the trees
more time to build up this 'flowering' compound.

Once the days reach about 12 hours of light and 12 hours of dark,
the high concentration of this compound triggers the beginning of the flowering cycle.
