"Significance of USN at DBS Trading Desk" by Suzi - 4.26.17

Entry Submitted by Suzi at 4:48 AM EDT on April 26, 2017

Re: USN Listed on Hong Kong DBS Bank Currency Exchange Rate List

Regarding the USN ISO 4217 currency code shown by DBS Bank Hong Kong:

The USN designation (with currency number 997) has been used for years and represents US Dollars (next day funds) for funds that are available the next day.

Go to this link and read the annotation at the bottom of the chart about the 3 kinds of US funds. Note also that DBS trades the Chinese Yuan sold both on shore and off shore - somewhat similar situation, but not exactly. In other words, currencies can have more than one iteration - and it was once discussed that the USD would in effect also be an onshore (domestic - new) currency for us and then have an offshore dollar for international trade.

However, in the last few days the SDR talk at the IMF/WB meetings has somewhat confused this issue. One thing is for sure: The SDR only works if all 5 component currencies are all asset-backed or all non-asset-backed. You could never mix them, in my humble opinion. That is why an opposition camp has suggested settling global trade in gold or gold trade notes, or just a variety of currencies, as has been happening. To date, I don't think this has played out definitely. Please correct me if someone has the definite news on this...

Bottom Line: We don't know whether a new dollar would TAKE OVER THE "USN" code designation, or become another designation for sure. Anyway, per all revals where you would see trading like this (emanating from a bank desk) I feel you would first have to see some kind of press release from the US Treasury, small though it may be.

Also, note that the value of USN is slightly different from the USD at this bank and with a much bigger spread, which makes me thing it is just the next day funds, especially since it is not valued in USD on the spreadsheet.

BUT WE WILL HAVE TO SEE to be sure. Patrick, you are over that direction. Why don't you phone up DBS, ask for the currency desk and make some inquiries??
