"It Will Get Done When It Gets Done" by Matt T - 4.24.17

Entry Submitted by Matt T at 10:23 AM EDT on April 24, 2017

I'll never forget the words of a super engineer I worked with, now retired.

Let's call him Barry.

We were in an intense, upper management project status meeting.

Barry was the lead/guru engineer.

The way schedule estimation is done in the engineering world is the upper managers ask the lead engineers to produce a project schedule estimate.

So the engineers come back with a usually fairly ballpark-accurate schedule.

Then management turns around and cuts the estimate down anywhere from 10% to 50% in all my years of experience.

(Aside: My last project schedule was cut by 50% and it turned out less than desired to put it nicely - because management held us to THEIR artificial and recipie-for-disaster timeline.)

Well, Barry's project schedule of course was cut just like any other.

This project meeting was held a couple months past the artificial deadline that management imposed upon him, but not past his original schedule estimate.

So Barry was quite excited (not in the happy way) when yet once again he was asked:

"You are 2 months late - when are you going to be done?"

Barry's emphatic, quite loud reply was:

"It Will Get Done When It Gets Done!"

And Barry was dead-on right.

It eventually got done, around HIS timeline, and all was well - success.

That was over 10 years ago.

The extra days, weeks, months that it took to get done (by management's artificial timeline) now seem like just a very short blip on the radar.

10 years from now when we look back on this time - when we think this RV/GCR is never going to get done - it will seem like just a flash in time and will long be forgotten.

Keep the faith!

God Bless

Matt T
