"Deaf Currency Holders/Q for OWK" by Naia Spirit - 4.25.17

Entry Submitted by Naia Spirit at 10:08 AM EDT on April 25, 2017

I posted this question awhile back but never received an answer. With the latest changes in how people are to call, I'm asking again and hoping for clarification this time.

I know I am not the only Deaf currency holder looking to exchange when the time comes. An interpreter or third party relay service will need to be used to call.

If the second number for Zim exchangers will also be your account number, will calling through an interpreter or relay service affect this process adversely in any way? Will this system have a live person answering or will it be automated? If the latter, this can be an issue because of the time delay in translation then the deaf person answering accordingly. If the former, no problem should exist. The deaf caller should state up front they are deaf and using a relay service to interpret.

I hope these personnel are also empowered with setting up sign language interpreters at the exchanges. If not, then the deaf caller will need to do so at their own expense, but that usually requires a 48-72 hour notice. But given it's the law, I hope these exchange centers have qualified, certified ASL interpreters on stand by as needed and requested.

Are any of these contingencies taken into consideration and in place for this of us with these special communication needs and to ensure equal access?

Since One Who Knows seems to be the one with all this information, I'd like to hear from him on this. But anyone in the know will do and I'd (as well as many others who are deaf and involved) would be much obliged.

BTW, thank you to OWK and others, such as Pink Roses, etal for providing transcripts when there are conference calls. Much appreciated.
