"Charity" - 10 Types of Charities - September 29, 2016

Organizations in general each have a very different mission to serve community. It can be somewhat overwhelming to look at all of the various nonprofits and discover which ones support causes that you feel strongly about. Luckily, we've taken a look at some of the most prominent charities and grouped them for you!

While individual nonprofits within the following groups will differ in their specific missions, these categories can serve as a good starting point if you're looking to learn more about charitable organizations.

Charities that fall into the medical, health, and scientific research category strive to find causes of and cures for diseases. They also help to develop new treatments and technology that can aid in these efforts.

Health and research charities work to reduce or eliminate the prevalence of diseases that affect people around the world by inventing new technologies and developing innovative treatments and cures.

Additionally, these nonprofits can also focus on research within different disciplines such as: Astronomy, Earth Science, Marine Science, Biology, Geology.

Nonprofits that are dedicated to public and social justice seek to protect civil and individual rights and encourage communities to advance social action.

These types of nonprofits can also include organizations that protect and represent victims of crime, abuse, and other social ills. Often, these charities are focused on equality and the rights of particular demographics.

Charities that are included in the international affairs category support quite a variety of causes. These types of nonprofits work across the globe to promote peace and understanding among countries. But that's not all!

They also promote international development and cultural exchanges and provide relief during natural disasters.

International affairs organizations promote and advance a number of worthy causes and seek to improve the lives of people in countries around the world.

Human services charities are comprised of organizations that serve - you guessed it - humans!

Like international affairs organizations, nonprofits that focus on human services cover a lot of ground. These organizations feed the hungry, provide emergency response during natural disasters, and offer shelter to those in need. Many of these nonprofits also care for the elderly and provide vocational training within their communities.

Whatever their specific mission is, human services organizations all strive to serve individuals and their families in times of need.

Religious charities and faith-based organizations promote and serve their respective religions and the activities that go along with them.

Additionally, faith-based and religious nonprofits offer humanitarian relief and services like abuse shelters, disaster relief, and food pantries.

Many of these charities provide assistance to individuals and their families regardless of their particular religious practices.

Educational nonprofits seek to make education possible for students of all ages. These organizations can serve students in pre-school all the way through graduate school.

Nonprofit charter schools, vocational schools, and technical institutions as well as libraries and Greek organizations find themselves in this category.

There are many diverse charities that comprise educational nonprofits. While they cover a lot of different areas of education, each one is dedicated to training and educating young people as well as adults.

Nonprofits that place an emphasis on children and families provide a variety of services ranging from: Child Care,Adoption, Foster Care, Family Counseling, Parenting Education.

Nonprofits that help children and families do so in different ways. Whether the focus is on child nutrition and health, parenting, or simply providing children with the opportunity to thrive in a nurturing environment, children- and family-focused charities effectively help young people across the country and the world.

Charities that support culture and the arts can take a variety of forms. Overall, they seek to encourage artistic expression and cultural awareness and preservation.

The goals of these organizations are accomplished in many different ways. From historical societies and museums to theaters and broadcasting services, arts and culture nonprofits strive to preserve artistic and cultural heritages from around the world.

Animal welfare and environmental organizations cover a wide range of causes but generally seek to improve the environment and the welfare of the creatures we share the planet with.

These charities include organizations that provide veterinary services and protection against animal cruelty, exploitation, and other abuses.

Environmental organizations protect all types of ecosystems, combat pollution, and promote conservation of land, water, plant, energy resources and many, many more--each striving to protect the Earth and all of its flying, swimming, and crawling inhabitants.

Charities that are involved in health care and wellness treat and support the sick and disabled and help promote public understanding and awareness of specific health risks, diseases, and disabilities.

Health care and wellness organizations can include nonprofits that focus on substance recovery, food and nutritional programs, and medical treatments.

Organizations that support the health care and wellness of people of all ages can also include hospitals and clinics that serve their local communities. Whatever shape these charities take, their end goal is to provide individuals with the best possible care and treatment.

There are many other charities that support a wide variety of causes. This list is by no means comprehensive, but it is a good starting point if you're trying to identify which causes you identify with and want to support.
