"To OWK and Grandfather: Concern about 2nd 800#" by Sugarbear - 4.25.17

Entry Submitted by Sugarbear at 7:55 AM EDT on April 25, 2017

"ZIM Exchange Process and 800#'s" - One Who Knows - 4.24.17

Many have expressed their concern over the security of the 2nd 800# that ZIM holders would need to call. There is a solution, even if you reveal your 2nd 800# to someone else.

1. The 2nd 800# for ZIM holders should be only that -- a phone number for ZIM holders to setup their appointment. It should NOT represent an account number nor represent a link to an account number.

2. The 2nd 800# should be single-use only. This means that once a person calls the number and establishes a connection to an operator, the phone number becomes unreachable by any subsequent caller -- they might receive a message stating that the phone number "cannot be reached."

So, if you revealed your 2nd 800# to someone else, either deliberately or unwittingly, and they called it, you or anyone else would not be able to use the number again but this is not problem. Just call the first 800# again to acquire a new 2nd 800#.

3. If for some reason, the phone system drops your 2nd 800# connection in the middle of your conversation, no problem. Just call the first 800# again to get a new 2nd 800# number to call, and perform the process over again with the new 2nd 800#.

4. Now at the conclusion of your 2nd 800# call, the service representative might provide a unique REFERENCE NUMBER that you would bring to your appointment. Repeat the unique REFERENCE NUMBER to the operator so that you know that you have the correct one. THIS WOULD BE THE NUMBER that you would write down and keep secret. This number would be single-use, too. You would present it at the exchange center/bank. Neither you, nor another person, could present it again.

5. When you go into your appointment, you would present the reference number. At that point, the bank could establish/create/assign a new account to you at that point.

However, if someone else had already presented your reference number at the time of your appointment, it means that somehow, someone obtained your reference number. Consequently, you cannot exchange your ZIM at that time with that reference number. You would have to setup a new appointment, if you are eligible. OWK or Grandfather might want to speak on this situation.

Now, it doesn't matter whether someone else has the information for the 2nd 800#. Only the REFERENCE NUMBER would matter, and you can only get that through a conversation with the service representative.

NOTE: I imagine that a sophisticated organization could launch a coordinated DOS (Denial of Service) attack against one or more 800#. This would prevent legitimate currency holders from obtaining the information that they need to schedule their appointments. The NPTB need to be aware of this. There could be dark hats among us, claiming hold currency who are determined to disrupt the scheduling process. However, if there are no enough of them, because the NPTB have taken care of them, then we are in good hands. There would be no need for anyone to concern themselves with a DOS attack.
