"Humanitarian Projects" by GK - 4.25.17

Entry Submitted by GK at 10:55 PM EDT on April 25, 2017

I have many humanitarian project ideas but here is one I think is simple and would do well for every small town struggling to sustain commerce. I moved to a small town. Around 5000 people. It is very rural and probably half the storefronts are empty. I would like to approach the city council and propose that every building with empty storefronts be involved in a program whereby the spaces become consignment shops for artists, photographers, theater, antiques, anything by the people that could make the town vibrant for day travel sight seeing, shopping.

I would help fund a synergistic covering of cost but shared with tax write offs, owner/landlords allowing space almost free but profit sharing, and a total community effort to make people want to spend a day or weekend. Bed and breakfasts, pontoon boats on the river that offer ice cream and coffee.

Farmers market, food tasting, sidewalk sales, acoustic street music.

Why allow buildings to be empty when there are so many people who could clean them up, paint them, decorate, remodel and allow craftsman and artisans to offer their skills and art.

A Frame shop can also sell original art and photography.

As long as the landlord can get what he or she needs in terms of tax breaks, skilled remodeling, create revenue streams and elevate property values and quality of life for everyone, why not. And if small towns everywhere who already have extraordinary old architecture and town squares and unique settings were to do this, going for rides in the country to all there is to offer could even stimulate travel by cars for day trips.

Another idea I have is to buy land and offer a community for anyone down on their luck to come, be welcome, given proper housing for their needs, such as a homeless mother, given food and shower and clothes and a chance to work and contribute in organic farming and kitchen preparations and groundskeeping, get sober... But a place that isn't about profit but just an oassis. We can offer bus tickets or train or plane faire for free to anyone to get out of cities where they are desperate. JUst an answer as simple as an 800 number phone call and a request to come.

Immediate assistance and kind loving gentle people to help whatever the personal situations might be from mental illness to substance abuse.

I have a few ideas that are a bit more cutting edge experimental for a situation like this but one step at a time.

I would also just like to observe people and offer them opportunities. For example I know a single mother who works in a gas station and she is hardworking and kind. I would like to say to her I will fund a small businss for you think about what you might like to do.

Then of course since I have 40 years in media, I would like to do a Netflix type studio but for stories that aren't what we commonly see. Stories not about killing and sex and despair but more like old Frank Capra.

Perhaps even a Sports complex for kids for all levels and sports and physical fitness to give every child a chance to learn the skills and team camraderie.

I loved baseball so much as a kid, and soccer, basketball and football. Just an amazing place with people who love the activity. Not for profit but so special that it is like a Disney land destination for families.

Bottom line is funding meets sustainable synergy of efforts fueling what is necessary to perpetuate the energy.

Meanwhile on the darkside of the moon the galactic space force waited patiently to get the call... To kill time they watched breaking bad and game of thrones and played video games... They were getting really sick of tang and space food sticks but they couldn't really complain... moon maidens were hot and didn't pull their curtains closed. At least that's what grandfather told me. Not thee grandfather, the crazy old grandfather who lives next door who did way too much acid in the 60s. He uses way too much old spice but is nice enough. He told me to buy zim. So I did.
